We use 2 different types of glue: Rubber Contact Adhesive and Rubberized CA Adhesive. Although their names are very similar, these adhesives are different in the way that they are used, the applications that they are used for, and the way that they dry. You will want to become familiar with each glue and how to use them before attempting to assemble your subwoofer using our adhesives.
Here’s how to use RUBBER CONTACT ADHESIVE:
Rubber Contact Adhesive is made up of a very specialized blend of rubber solids and a solvent that liquifies it. This adhesive will SHRINK when drying, allowing it to put a very tight hold on any parts it is used to glue together. It works very well for the application of surrounds to the basket and cone. It is also very good for dustcap applications. This adhesive will work for repairing small screwdriver holes or rips in the surround as well.
No other activator is needed for this adhesive.
Just apply a bead of glue. Place parts onto the glue and let dry. This glue will air dry to the touch in 1 hour and fully cure in 24 hours.
Here’s how to use CA ADHESIVE and ACTIVATOR:
We recommend CA Glue for all spider to coil and spider to frame joints, all cone to coil joints, and also for some dustcap applications. Use CA adhesive in any application where a very strong, but only slightly flexible material is needed.
CA adhesive is not recommended for polypropylene.
Activator is required with the use of CA adhesive. We do not recommend using this adhesive without activator. Do not mix adhesive and activator in bottles.
1: Make sure to have a clean surface (use acetone or sand the area)
This is a very important thing. If there is dirt or paint or any other contaminant on the surface, even CA glue won’t stick to it.
2: Apply a bead of CA
Try to use a continuous bead of glue. Remember that the glue will spread out want your parts are pressed into it. You want to apply enough glue to hold the parts securely, but not so much that you make a mess. You will want a small amount of the glue to squeeze out and be exposed so that you can spray activator on it.
3: Place the object to be glued into the adhesive.
Just place the object onto the adhesive. Slightly moving (or wiggling) the object will help to
spread the adhesive around and into the surface of the glued object. Do not apply any activator to the parts or to the glue until all of the parts are in place and in their final position.
4: Apply activator
The correct way to apply the activator to the CA glue is to very lightly spray the activator (sometimes 2-4 times) on the glue bead. The goal is to try and seal the outside of the bead. We want it to keep its shape and color, but still be able to properly cure. It takes CA glue between 24-48 hrs to FULLY cure on the inside. Spray the activator over the exposed glue very lightly, allowing the exterior of the bead to dry. It only takes the activator a few seconds to evaporate. Repeat this process a couple of times until the glue is absolutely dry to the touch on the outside.
5: Dry Time
Always wait at least 24hrs before using the assembled pieces.
